The Casanovas To Release 'Reptilian Overlord' September 18th
Formed in 1999 by frontman Tommy Boyce, The Casanovas began much like most rock bands, as a recreational collab between a few brothers and mates over a few beers but by the year 2000 this Melbourne trio were quickly making a name for themselves in Australia’s rock scene. Their debut single ’10 Outta 10’ was the first taste of what was soon-to-be their career breaking release ‘Keep It Hot’ which featured tracks ‘Nasty’ and ‘Shake It’.The release of ‘Keep It Hot’ saw The Casanovas jump on a nine-week stint with The Datsuns as they toured NZ, Europe and the US and was followed by a highly anticipated visit to SXSW in Texas. A return to home soil initiated a number of national tour supports kicking things off with The Living End in 2003. The release of their debut self-titled album in 2004 saw The Casanovas piggyback onto tours with Motorhead and The Darkness, while their second album ‘All Night Long’ in 2006 saw the band paired with The Black Crowes, Airbourne and Redd Kross.Somewhere in amongst it all the trio; found time to make appearances at Big Day Out, Meredith, Triple J live and shows in New York and tour in Japan.
Come 2007, familial responsibilities and Tommy’s completion of an architectural degree imposed a hiatus. All the while, the trio continued to write and play intermittently but 2013’s rapturous performance at (Powder Monkeys bassist) Tim Hemensley’s 10th anniversary gig spurred the trio to forge album three. Almost 9 years since their last album, The Casanovas dropped ‘Terra Casanova’ in 2015. Overcoming a number of obstacles including Tommy’s diagnosis with Haemochromatosis – a physically debilitating iron overload disorder – The Casanovas’ return from hiatus was warmly welcomed by all. In 2017 following the release of Terra Casanova, the trio hopped on a plane to Europe where they played a packed out headline tour through countries like Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Last year, with a set of great new material, the re-tooled Casanovas hit the studio with iconic Oz rock producer Mark Opitz (AC/DC, The Angels, Cold Chisel, The Divinyls) to record their fifth album. The Casanovas provided the first taste from the upcoming album late last year when they released their first new music in over four years with popular single ‘Hollywood Riot’. ‘Reptilian Overlord’ revels in everything that fans have come to know and love about The Casanovas, and it shows the impact of Opitz, who was involved in many of the band’s favourite albums like Powerage and Face To Face. As Casanovas bassist Damo Campbell says, “Mark is the master at miking for great guitar tones. He definitely brought some of those techniques into our sessions… It was also pretty inspiring to be in the studio hearing some of Mark’s stories of some of the great rock bands he has worked with over his career.” Swagger is something that these guys have in spades. Although they got caught up in the early 21st-century rock mania, The Casanovas always had deeper roots and a natural ease. Hailing from the Live Rock’n’Roll Capital of the Universe – Melbourne – The Casanovas were a merging of two great local traditions –punk rock’n’roll and Oz Rock – and they had a twinkle in their eye and brought a youthful freshness to both when they appeared at the start of the century. Now in 2020 The Casanovas are back with their first new music in 4 years and in their opinion, some of the best they have ever written.
